Description
Crispy, golden-brown green tomatoes with a tender, tart interior, made healthier in an air fryer. A Southern comfort favorite with minimal oil, perfect as an appetizer or side dish.
Ingredients
4–6 green tomatoes, sliced (1/4-inch thick)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons olive oil
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon paprika or cayenne (for spice)
Instructions
Preheat air fryer to 390°F (200°C)
In a shallow bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, salt, and pepper
In another bowl, beat the egg
Dip each tomato slice into the egg, then press into the flour-cornmeal mixture to coat
Place slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer
Spritz with olive oil and season with salt and pepper
Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway
Check for desired crispiness (up to 12 minutes total)
Serve warm
Notes
Use thick slices (1/4-inch) for best texture
Pat tomato slices dry before coating to improve crispiness
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days
Optional dipping sauces: remoulade, ranch, or garlic aioli
